01 What is a home EV charge point?

A home EV charge point is fixed charging equipment designed to supply an electric vehicle safely from the property’s electrical installation. It normally communicates with the vehicle, controls the charging process and provides a more suitable long-term solution than regular use of a standard domestic socket.

02 What EV charger power should I choose?

A 7 kW charger is a common choice for homes with a suitable single-phase supply. Lower-power charging may be selected where electrical capacity is limited. Chargers rated at 11 kW or 22 kW normally require a suitable three-phase supply, and the vehicle must also support that AC charging rate.

03 What is the difference between tethered and untethered chargers?

A tethered charger has a permanently attached charging cable, making everyday connection quick and convenient. An untethered charger has a socket and uses a separate removable cable. Untethered units can provide a neater appearance and greater cable flexibility, while tethered units avoid handling and storing a separate cable after each charge.

Existing loads such as electric heating, showers, cooking equipment, solar panels, batteries and heat pumps should also be considered before the charger and circuit are selected.

05 Does an EV charger need a dedicated circuit?

EV charging equipment is normally supplied by a dedicated circuit designed for the expected continuous load. The cable, protective device, isolation arrangement and connection at the consumer unit must be selected for the charger, installation conditions, cable route and available electrical capacity.

06 What is EV charger load balancing?

Load balancing monitors electricity being used by the property and can temporarily reduce the charger’s output when other high-demand equipment is operating. This helps prevent the total demand from exceeding an agreed supply limit and can sometimes allow charging without an immediate supply upgrade.

07 What electrical protection does an EV charger require?

The required protection depends on the charger, earthing arrangement and installation design. It may include individual residual-current protection, overcurrent protection, DC leakage protection and suitable open-PEN fault protection. Protection built into the charger is checked against the manufacturer’s instructions before additional devices are selected.

08 Does the electricity network operator need to be informed?

Yes. An EV charge point installation must be notified to the relevant Distribution Network Operator, and some installations require approval before connection. The route depends on the existing supply, maximum demand, charger rating, load management, service equipment and whether any network or supply upgrade is required.

09 Does my home charger need smart functionality?

New private charge points sold for domestic and workplace use in Great Britain are generally required to meet the applicable smart charge point regulations. Smart functionality can support scheduled charging, off-peak tariffs, energy monitoring and controlled charging when electricity demand is lower.

10 How long does an EV charger installation take?

Many straightforward domestic installations can be completed within one working day. The duration depends on the cable route, charger position, consumer unit access, wall construction, groundwork and any electrical defects or supply limitations. The electricity may need to be isolated briefly while the new circuit is connected and tested.

11 How quickly will a home charger charge my car?

Charging time depends on the usable battery capacity, current battery level, charger output and the vehicle’s maximum AC charging rate. A charger cannot force the vehicle to accept more power than its onboard charger supports. Temperature, battery management and load balancing can also affect the charging rate.

12 How much does EV charger installation cost?

The cost depends on the charger model, cable length, cable route, consumer unit arrangement, electrical protection, load management, groundwork, wall construction and supply condition. Any required earthing, bonding, consumer unit or supply work is quoted separately. Electro Conduct is not currently VAT registered, so VAT is not added.
