Emergency Advice

What to Do During an Electrical Emergency

Follow these simple safety steps if you notice sparks, smoke, burning smells, exposed wires or repeated electrical tripping.

Do not touch damaged electrical fittings. Keep people away from the affected area and do not attempt your own repair.

Step 1 Keep Away From the Fault

Do not touch exposed wires, damaged sockets, wet electrical equipment or anything producing sparks, heat or smoke.

Step 2 Switch Off the Power if Safe

Switch off the affected circuit or the main electrical supply only when it is safe and the consumer unit can be reached without risk.

Step 3 Do Not Repeatedly Reset the Breaker

A circuit breaker that keeps tripping may indicate a serious fault. Leave it switched off and contact a qualified electrician.

Step 4 Contact an Electrician

Explain what happened, which areas have lost power and any warning signs such as burning smells, buzzing, heat or sparks.

Smoke, Fire or Immediate Danger?

Get out, stay out and call 999. Do not return to the property until the emergency services confirm it is safe.

Fault Finding & Repairs Guidance

Electrical Fault Questions, Answered Clearly

Practical answers about electrical faults, circuit tripping, power loss, diagnostic testing, repair options, appointment times and pricing in London.

Pricing is confirmed after the fault and required work are understood

Costs depend on the type of fault, diagnostic time, access, repair complexity and parts required. Some work is quoted at a fixed price, while some investigations or repairs may be charged on an hourly basis.

01 What is electrical fault finding?

Electrical fault finding is a structured investigation used to identify the cause of an electrical problem. Instead of replacing parts by guesswork, the electrician reviews the symptoms, checks the affected circuit and carries out suitable tests. The aim is to locate the likely fault, assess any immediate risk and explain the repair options before additional work is carried out.

02 When should I book electrical fault finding?

Book electrical fault finding when an RCD or circuit breaker keeps tripping, part of the property loses power, sockets or lights stop working, or you notice heat, buzzing, burning smells, sparks or damaged wiring. Stop using the affected equipment. Do not touch exposed conductors or attempt a DIY repair, and switch off the affected circuit only when it is safe to do so.

03 Why does my RCD or circuit breaker keep tripping?

Repeated tripping can be caused by a faulty appliance, damaged wiring, moisture, overloading, an earth fault, a loose connection or a problem with the protective device itself. Resetting it repeatedly does not remove the cause. Fault finding helps separate appliance-related problems from faults in the fixed installation and identifies the next safe step.

04 What can cause partial or complete power loss?

Power loss may be caused by a tripped protective device, a damaged circuit, a loose connection, a faulty consumer-unit component or an external supply issue. If only your property or one part of it is affected, an internal electrical fault may need investigation. The electrician first checks the supply position and then tests the relevant circuits and accessible connections.

05 What do you check during a fault-finding visit?

The checks depend on the symptoms and the affected area. They may include the consumer unit, RCDs or RCBOs, circuit protection, accessible wiring, sockets, switches, lighting points, fixed equipment and relevant terminations. Testing may include continuity, insulation resistance, polarity and other targeted checks needed to narrow down the cause of the fault.

06 How long does electrical fault finding take?

The time required depends on how clear the symptoms are, whether the fault is continuous or intermittent, the number of affected circuits, access to electrical points and the condition of the installation. Some faults are identified quickly, while concealed, complex or intermittent problems can require additional diagnostic time or a return visit.

07 How much does electrical fault finding and repair cost?

A fixed price cannot always be confirmed before the fault has been inspected. The cost depends on the type of fault, diagnostic time, access, repair complexity, replacement parts and the amount of work required. Straightforward repairs may be priced during the visit, while larger work may need a separate quotation. Electro Conduct is not currently VAT registered, so VAT is not added.

08 Do you charge by the hour for electrical repairs?

Some fault-finding and repair work may be charged on an hourly basis, particularly where the cause is uncertain or the investigation time cannot be predicted accurately. Where the required repair is clearly defined, a fixed quotation may be more suitable. The charging basis is explained before additional work proceeds, and no extra work is added without approval.

09 Are repairs included in the fault-finding visit?

The initial visit focuses on diagnosing the reported problem and making immediate risks safe where possible. Minor repairs may be completed during the same visit when the fault is identified, the correct parts are available and you approve the work. Larger repairs, replacement parts, disruptive access or work affecting several circuits may be quoted separately.

10 Can the electrical fault be repaired during the same visit?

Often, yes. Straightforward faults such as a damaged accessory, loose accessible connection or clearly identified component may be repaired during the visit if it is safe and practical. A return visit may be required where specialist parts are needed, the fault is concealed, access must be arranged or the repair involves more extensive wiring work.

11 What happens if the fault cannot be found on the first visit?

Intermittent faults and concealed wiring problems are not always present when the electrician attends. In these cases, the affected area may need further monitoring, additional testing or a return visit when the symptoms reappear. The electrician will explain what has been ruled out, any temporary safety measures and the most appropriate next step.

12 What is not included in electrical fault finding?

Fault finding does not automatically include replacement parts, full rewiring, opening walls or ceilings, decoration, making good or work on specialist systems. These items are only carried out when separately agreed. Inaccessible areas and limitations are explained, and any broader repair work is discussed and approved before it begins.

13 Can you complete EICR remedial work?

Yes. Electro Conduct can assess and carry out many repairs identified in an EICR, including damaged accessories, unsafe connections, protective-device issues and localised wiring defects. The original EICR observations are reviewed first, and the required scope is confirmed before work begins. More extensive remedial work may require a separate quotation and appropriate certification after completion.

14 How should I prepare for a fault-finding appointment?

Provide clear access to the consumer unit and affected sockets, switches, lights or equipment. Note when the problem started, which rooms or circuits are affected and what was operating when it occurred. Keep unsafe equipment switched off, mention any recent electrical or building work and tell the electrician about alarms, medical equipment or essential supplies before testing begins.

Safety note: do not touch exposed wiring, damaged accessories or overheated electrical equipment. Keep the affected circuit or equipment switched off where safe and arrange an inspection by a qualified electrician.
