01 What type of fire alarm system does my property need?

The correct system depends on how the building is used, its layout, occupancy, sleeping risk, escape routes and the findings of any Fire Risk Assessment. A home may need interlinked smoke and heat alarms, while an HMO, office, shop or commercial building may require a panel-based conventional, addressable or wireless system.

02 What is the difference between smoke, heat and multi-sensor detectors?

Smoke detectors respond to smoke and are suitable for many circulation and living areas. Heat detectors respond to a rise in temperature and are commonly selected for kitchens or places where steam and cooking fumes could cause unwanted alarms. Multi-sensor devices combine more than one sensing method and may improve detection suitability when correctly specified.

Remote monitoring can pass an alarm or fault signal to an alarm receiving centre or another nominated service. Whether it is required depends on the Fire Risk Assessment, occupancy, sleeping risk, staffing, insurer requirements and emergency plan. Monitoring supports alarm management but does not replace evacuation procedures, testing or maintenance.
